Hobbit sequel, The Desolation of Smaug, has topped the US box office, taking $73.7 million, according to initial estimates.
However, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was down on the first Hobbit installment, which took $84.6 million in its opening weekend last year.
Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros admitted the takings “could have been a little better”.
He said bad weather in the east of the country “probably took a couple million dollars out of my pocket”.
“But our box office will survive. We are right on target to do very similar numbers to the last Hobbit, which grossed $1 billion worldwide [overall],” Dan Fellman said.
Disney animation Frozen moved down into second place taking $22.2 million in its third weekend. The film has made $164.4 million in the US since its release.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas came in third place with $16.2 million. Box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian said he thought bad weather would also have affected the film’s takings as Tyler Perry’s films normally open in the $20 million range.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, was in fourth place with $13.2 million.

Thor: The Dark World remained in the top five with $2.7 million, bringing its US domestic haul to $198.1 million.
In sixth place was Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck, taking $2.3 million in its second weekend.
Disney comedy Delivery Man, starring Vince Vaughn, was at seven in its fourth weekend, with Philomena at eight ahead of The Book Thief.
Homefront, starring Jason Statham and James Franco, rounded out the top 10.
David O Russell’s American Hustle opened in just six locations but took $690,000. It will be on general release in the US on January 1st, 2014.
As the year draws to a close Paul Dergarabedian said the yearly box office total looked like it will eclipse 2012’s $10.8 billion box office record.

The irony wasn’t lost on fans when Kim Kardashian signed on to appear in Tyler Perry’s new film Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor in 2011.
Hot on the heels of ending one of Hollywood’s shortest marriages, Kim Kardashian plays social-climber Ava, a preened business woman who loves figure-hugging dresses and lambastes her co-workers for not meeting her standards of style and beauty.
A newly-released trailer for the comedy proves the role isn’t much of a stretch for the star.
Kim Kardashian’s voice narrates the top of the two-and-a-half minute clip.
“We have a billion dollars walking in and out of these offices looking for love.”
The scene opens from a sweeping cityscape to the sprawling offices where Kim Kardashian’s character rips into marriage counselor Judith, played by Jurnee Smollett.
“You have a standard to uphold. That blouse,” she miffs.
“It’s telling it all.”

Not to be undone by her image-obsessed colleague, Judith questions Ava’s cotton candy pink dress – not unlike the ones Kim Kardashian is so often seen pouring herself into on her day-to-day outings.
“What’s wrong with my dress?” she squeaks, eyes glazed, head tilted in confusion.
“Can you breathe?” he adversary asks.
Kim Kardashian’s character narrates the arrival of “the largest social media investor since Zuckerberg,” in reference to billionaire Facebook co-founder Mark.
Robbie Jones stars as Harvey, who seduces Judith, an Ivy League educated relationship expert, into considering leaving her husband to be with him.
When the rush of their affair fades, she soon realizes she’s made a mistake.
Vanessa Williams, Brandy Norwood and Eric West also star in the film, described by Perry as “a bold exploration of the intrigue and perils of infidelity”.
Kim Kardashian, 32, took to her blog on Thursday to share the release of the teaser.
“Temptation Trailer is Here!” she wrote.
“I’m so excited to reveal the trailer for the new Tyler Perry movie I am in called Temptation, which debuted on Yahoo! Movies today!
“This has been an incredible experience for me and I’m so excited for the movie to come out on March 29, 2013.”
Principle photography for the film began in Atlanta, Georgia in October, 2011 – the same month Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries.
Kim Kardashian is still legally married to Kris Humphries, although she has moved on to date longtime friend, Kanye West.
Her divorce attorney told a judge last month Kim wants to move on with her life but is “handcuffed” to her estranged husband because their divorce case is not yet ready for trial.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry was so afraid Bobbi Kristina Brown couldn't act he only gave her a handful of lines for her appearance on his upcoming TV sitcom For Better Or Worse
Tyler Perry told ETonline.com: “I’m so proud of her because she said she wanted to act and I had a feeling she could but I wasn’t sure until she hit the set.
“The first couple of shows she did, she had very few lines because I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but the kid showed up and blew my mind. She definitely has it (star potential).”
Tyler Perry is convinced Bobbi Kristina Brown has a bright future ahead of her if she chooses to pursue a career onscreen: “She’s a definite actor, and she can go as far as she wants to go in the business.”
He was recently forced to speak out against false reports suggesting Bobbi Kristina Brown walked off the set of For Better or Worse and urged the media to stop spreading rumors about the youngster.
In a post on his blog, Tyler Perry wrote: “Please Leave This Baby Alone!!!! And She Is A Baby!!! Please stop the lies and give this child some room to breathe and grieve.“

Bobbi Kristina Brown is going ahead with plans to work on a reality show that will also star Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law Pat, brother Gary, mother Cissy and Pat’s daughter Rayah.
The 42-year-old director and actor lent his private jet to the Houston family to shuttle Whitney Houston’s remains back to New Jersey for her burial, and pleaded with people to give her offspring the privacy she deserves in his post.
Tyler Perry posted a message on his personal website yesterday denying that Bobbi Kristina Brown had quit his TBS sitcom For Better or Worse because she was upset about her mother, the late Whitney Houston.
“Leave This Baby Alone and Stop the Lies Please!!!” Tyler Perry headlined the post on his website.
“I woke up this morning to my publicist calling me saying that there were reports that Bobbi Kristina walked off the set of <<For Better Or Worse>>. NOT TRUE AT ALL PEOPLE!!! There is no way that she could have walked off the set because we have finished taping the season.”
RadarOnline reported earlier on Wednesday that Bobbi Kristina Brown, who signed on for a recurring role on For Better or Worse in March, had quit the show “a few weeks ago.”

Tyler Perry wrote on his website: “Were there tough days for [Bobbi Kristina]? Yes of course. Not because of the acting or any job-related issues but because of the fact that she had just lost her mother. And being someone who knows about losing their mother, I know grief comes in different ways and you never know when it’s going to hit you or how it’s going to hit you … So yes she was grieving, but grief aside, she managed to finish her obligation and did a great job at the same time.”
The second season of For Better or Worse, which includes the episodes starring Bobbi Kristina Brown, premieres on July 13 on TBS.
Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston’s mother, paid an emotional tribute to her beloved daughter today as family, friends and some of the biggest names in the music world gathered at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, for the singer’s funeral.
Among the mourners at today’s highly-charged service, were singers Chaka Khan, Brandy, Roberta Flack, Jordin Sparks and Jennifer Hudson. Singer Ray J, who spent time with Houston during her last days, broke down crying. His sister, singer Brandy, put her arm around him.
After a brief welcome by City Mayor Cory Booke, Pastor Joe Carter took to the alter to read some scripture and start the celebration of Whitney Houston’s life.
Gospel singer Donnie McClurkin was the first soloist to sing. He performed Stand which was a request from the Houston family. As he came up to sing he briefly stopped to greet Whitney Houston’s mother Cissy and her daughter Bobbi Kristina who are sitting next to each other on the front row of the church.
Members of the congregation stood up and started raising their hands and praising as Donnie McClurkin sang to the congregation accompanied by the large gospel choir.
Dionne Warwick, who is officiating the service and introducing the guests to the congregation, told Donie McClurkin after his performance: “This song means a lot to Cissy and a great deal to Whitney so thank you.”
She then invited Tyler Perry to come and say a few words.
Tyler Perry started by saying: “It was Pat [Whitney’s sister-in-law] that introduced me to Whitney. I met her a few years ago. She told me about things that she went through. I saw this sadness and heaviness.
“But before she would say what was bothering her she would interrupt and say <<But the Lord… But my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ>>. I’m thankful for all that God has done in her life.
“There was a grace that followed her through her life. There was a grace that kept on carrying her. She loved the Lord.”
Tyler Perry ended by saying: “God bless you family. We love you Whitney.”
Dionne Warwick said: “That’s someone who truly knew Whitney. He loved the lord and still does.”
She then invited gospel singer Bebe Winans to come up and sing.
Bebe Winans and his sister CeCe Winans came up to the altar. CeCe was a close friend of Whitney Houston’s and is Bobbi Kristina’s Godmother.
“Whitney invited us over to her home and we sat in her closet. It was a huge closet,” Bebe Winans said.
He told the story of how Whitney Houston changed her tour so they would be the ones to headline instead of her which made “Clive Davies” mad.
Bebe Winans said that Whitney Houston was doing it because they were “poor” and she was “rich” and she wanted to help them and get them more exposure.
He told the story through tears and laughter at how giving their long term friend was.
Bebe Winans sang a heartfelt rendition of I Really Miss You. The lyrics of which speak of how much he will miss her “wit, charm, just want to hold you in my arms”.
“I’ll miss her voice when she will call. I’ll miss her smile most of all. I’m gonna miss you.”
During the song, his voice broke as he became emotional and he ended the song in tears.
Dionne Warwick then invited renowned pastor Bishop T. D. Jakes to the pew who met her on the set of the remake of Sparkle, Whitney Houston’s final movie which will be released in August, which he helped to produce.
“I really the dichotomy at this time. Surrounded by friends and admirers enthralled by the beautiful Whitney Houston. But that’s not what brings you here because you knew who she was. Not what she did. You shared her with the world and we just want to take a moment to say thank you,” he opened up with saying.
He embarked on a sermon where he talked about the Bible speaking of love being stronger than death.
“One day you’ll be driving and hear Whitney’s voice in your head, something that she said or did, and you’ll giggle. They may leave you outwardly but they never leave you inwardly.”
Kim Burrell was next to take to the altar. The gospel singer and pastor says Whitney Houston helped her in the start in her career.
She was supposed to sing I Believe In You and Me, a favourite of Whitney Houston’s, but she instead did a personalized version of A Change Is Going To Come, where she sang that a change had to come in Whitney’s life.
Her lyrics were directed to Cissy Houston and sang about how she would get on her knees and pray for her daughter during all the trials and tribulations in her life.
“Whitney a change has come,” she ended the song and then went and gave Cissy Houston a huge hug.
The Bodyguard co-star Kevin Costner got up to share memories of his time with his beloved friend Whitney Houston
The Bodyguard co-star Kevin Costner got up to share memories of his time with his beloved friend.
Kevin Costner started by saying: “I would like to thank Cissy and Dionne for the honor of being here. Everyone treating my wife and I so gracefully.”
“The song I Will Always Love You almost wasn’t. She was meant to sing What Becomes of the Broken Hearted. So what becomes our broken hearts.
“For a moment we should dry our tears, suspend our sorrow and anger. Never forgot that Cissy and Bobbi Kristina are sitting among us.
“Your mother and I had a lot in common,” Kevin Costner said to Bobbi Kristina.
“He’s a boy, she’s a girl. I’m white, she’s black. You’d think we had nothing in common but we did.
“We both grew up in a Baptist church. My grandmother led the choir and played the piano.”
Kevin Costner told stories of his childhood in the church that Whitney Houston enjoyed him telling her when they worked together including him “drinking grape juice” in the back of the church.
He laughed: “I can see her as a skinny girl running around this place, using her smile to get out of trouble and Cissy having enough of it. Whitney said she was waiting no whisper, her mother Cissy and cousin Dionne.
“As I’m sure of Whitney’s place in musical history. I’m also sure of how she felt about her mother. Was she good enough. Could I have done better. Did they really like me or were they just being polite because they’re scared of you Cissy?”
The actor spoke about how there was initial anxiety about Whitney Houston, a black woman, to play alongside Kevin Costner.
He said that there was a sigh of relief when it turned out that Whitney Houston was going to be able to do The Bodyguard because she was going to be one tour. But Kevin Costner said he would wait a year for so she would be available.
“Whitney was nervous and scared that she wasn’t good enough for the role. But I told her I would be with her every step of the way.
“I wanted to tell her that the fame was rigged. That I didn’t care how the test went, that she could fall down and start speaking in tongues. That somehow it was a kind of acting method.
“The Whitney I knew despite her worldwide fame always worried. Am I good enough. Am I pretty enough. Will they like me. The part that made her great and the part that made her great was also the part that made her stumble.
“A lot of men could have played my role. But you Whitney were the only person who could have played Rachel Marron. People didn’t just like you Whitney. They loved you. I was your pretend bodyguard once. And now you’re gone too soon.
“What you did was the rarest of achievements. You set the bar so high. That your colleagues don’t even sing that little country song. What’s the point.
“I think Whitney would tell you, little girls wanting to become singers. Guard your bodies and guard the precious miracle you have.”
Fighting back tears Kevin Costner said: “Off you go Whitney, off you go. Escorted by an army of angels to your heavenly father. When you sing before him. Don’t you worry. You will be good enough.”
Singer Alicia Keys was next to perform and, introducing her Dionne Warwick said she was “a young lady that Whitney adored”.
Alicia Keys was tearful as she walked to the piano and spoke about her friendship with the singer.
“We called each other Meema. She was such a beautiful human being. Call you for no reason at all but just to say hi. And that’s rare I think sometimes.
“I feel like in so many ways she reached back to me and to Michael and Brandy and Jordin and all these young artists and made us feel strong and capable and loved. I think she is an angel to us. She has been an angel to us.”
Alicia Keys then sang a medley of songs on the piano starting with Send Me An Angel, changing the lyrics to Whitney is an Angel.
Whitney Houston will be laid to rest on Saturday, 18 February, in the New Jersey church where she sang as a child.
The owner of the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark said Whitney Houston funeral will be held at 12:00 EST at New Jersey’s New Hope Baptist Church.
Whitney Houston’s body was flown from Los Angeles to her home neighbourhood in New Jersey last night.
The late singer’s body was flown in a private jet reportedly owned by Tyler Perry and transported to Newark’s Whigham Funeral Home, which handled the 2003 funeral of her father.
The private jet was said to be chartered by the highest paid man in entertainment Tyler Perry.
The Atlanta-born actor is said to have rushed to the hospital when he heard about his close friend’s death and offered his plane to her family right away, according to sources.
Whitney Houston will be laid to rest on Saturday, 18 February, in the New Jersey church where she sang as a child
Whitney Houston’s body touched down at New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport at 10:30 p.m. last night after the Gulfstream III jet took off from California’s Van Nuys airport following its release from the LA County Department of Coroner.
The funeral home’s owner, Carolyn Whigham, said the funeral service would be by invitation only, adding it would be a “private time” for the Houston family.
“They have shared her for 30 some years with the city, with the state, with the world,” she told reporters. “This is their time now for their farewell.”
The body of the 48-year-old singer was found in a bathtub at her suite in Beverly Hilton hotel on Saturday, surrounded by different bottles of prescription pills including ibuprofen – a painkiller, Xanax – an anti-anxiety drug, Midol – for menstrual cramps, amoxicillin – for bacterial infections and several others.
Friends have spoken out to say Whitney Houston’s premature death was “not a great surprise” due to her “downward spiral” which was helped along by others.
“As sad as this sounds, it’s not a great surprise and yet, it’s unbelievable,” a music source told People magazine.
“There are demons she fought privately and publicly for many years… She’s been on a downward spiral for a long time and when you have those people around you that enable the behavior … she couldn’t shake those demons.”
According to one source, Whitney Houston spent her last days in a drug-fuelled trance. “She was like a zombie,” the source said.
It has also emerged that the Beverly Hilton Hotel management asked the coroner to leave Whitney Houston’s body in her hotel room until the Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party finished, according to RadarOnline.
A source told the website the decision was made “out of respect for Whitney Houston” and amid security concerns.
But it was also reported that the management did not want to upset guests at the hotel either.
“It would be insensitive for the van to be driven out with her body as limos were pulling away with the A-list guests,” the source said.
Whitney Houston’s body was eventually removed after midnight, when officers had finished their on-scene work.
Toxicology tests are under way, following an autopsy on Sunday and the authorities say it may be up to eight weeks before they can confirm the cause of death.
No criminal probe is under way, police said, but the Los Angeles coroner said her room did contain some prescription drugs.
