Erin Brockovich – who was famously portrayed by Julia Roberts in a movie about her life – has apologized for her drunken boating arrest last Friday as it’s revealed that her blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.

“At no time was the boat away from the dock and there was no public safety risk,” Erin Brockovich said in a statement, denying police claims that she operated the boat in open waters.

“That being said, I take drunk driving very seriously, this was clearly a big mistake. I know better and I am very sorry,” she added.

“After a day in the sun and with nothing to eat it appears that a couple of drinks had a greater impact than I realized.”

Legal clerk and environmental activist Erin Brockovich, 52, was booked into jail around 10 p.m. on Friday after game warden in Lake Mead, Nevada spotted her struggling with her boat at a marina.

Erin Brockovich had been out on the boat with a male companion but was alone when she tried to dock it.

Edwin Lyngar of the Nevada Department of Wildlife said her blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit of 0.08 when she was arrested.

“She was obviously struggling to put the boat in the slip, and if you’ve had any experience, it’s a simple enough operation,” Edwin Lyngar said.

“This incident is an important reminder that boating under the influence is on par with driving under the influence,” he added.

The mother of three, who has an estimated net worth of $42 million, had slurred speech and was unsteady on her feet as she tried to dock the boat. She failed a sobriety test and was taken to jail, where she was later released on a $1,000 bail.

Under Nevada law, a first-time offense of boating while intoxicated is a misdemeanor that draws fines from $1,000 to $2,000 but no jail time. Authorities were unsure whether it was Erin Brockovich’s first arrest on the charge.

Erin Brockovich, who married her third husband, Eric L. Ellis, in 1999, became a worldwide celebrity after the 2000 Steven Soderbergh film about her life.

As a legal assistant she helped win a record $333 million settlement from a power company after dozens of people were poisoned by chemicals released into the water supply in the California town of Hinkley.

After suffering an injury in an auto accident, Erin Brokovich hired the California law firm Masry and Vititoe to represent her in a civil lawsuit against the other driver. While the firm won her a small settlement, the single mother needed a job to support her family.

The law firm hired Erin Brokovich as a file clerk, which is what ultimately launched the former Miss Pacific Coast’s career in law and public advocacy.

While organizing files for a pro-bono real estate case, Erin Brokovich uncovered medical records that would lead to the largest settlement ever paid out in a direct action lawsuit in U.S. history.

Erin Brokovich’s investigation found that the Pacific Gas and Electric company had been poisoning Hinkley residents for more than 30 years.

Between 1952 and 1966, the company used the chemical hexavalent chromium (often referred to as Cr-6) to fight corrosion in the cooling tower in the Hinkley compressor, which was part of a natural gas pipeline connecting much of northern California to the San Francisco Bay area.

The waste water dissolved the Cr-6 and it ended up in unlined ponds near the cooling tower.

The Cr-6 then found its way into the groundwater, contaminating a two-by-one-mile area around the plant.

Because of Erin Brokovich’s research, more than 600 Hinklley residents shared the giant $333 million settlement.

For her work, Brokovich was given a $2 million bonus.

Julia Roberts won a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich in the self-titled movie about the case.

Erin Brokovich and Masry then became the face of environmental litigation and went on to file several lawsuits against various corporations for pollution issues.

Since the film, Erin Brockovich has become a high profile campaigner and TV star with her own series, Final Justice.

Just last year, Erin Brockovich was back on the big screen in the documentary Last Call at the Oasis, which explores challenges related to the planet’s dwindling and increasingly polluted water supply.

Reese Witherspoon has been pictured in handcuffs following her dramatic arrest in the early hours of Friday morning.

The footage shows Reese Witherspoon, 37, being led out of an Atlanta police station in cuffs before being unshackled and taken inside for booking.

Reese Witherspoon appears in a calm and co-operative demeanor, although the video – obtained by TMZ serves as another nail in her well-carved squeaky clean image.

The actress was arrested for disorderly conduct last Friday after her husband Jim Toth was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Talent agent Jim Toth, 42, apparently feels “awful” for getting Reese Witherspoon involved in his arrest and is overwhelmed with guilt.

A source told People magazine: “[Jim Toth] feels awful that he involved Reese in the situation. He made a bad decision and
it certainly made things worse that he dragged her into it.

“[He] has to pay the consequences, bottom line. He gets that.”

Jim Toth reached 1.39 on the sobriety test – over Georgia’s legal limit of 0.08 – when he and Reese Witherspoon were pulled over in the early hours of the morning and it is thought their “embarrassing” incident will cause him to look at alcohol in a different way.

The source added: “Jim has always been a big social drinker. A lot of his job is being social. He’s out to lunch or dinner almost every day of the week, schmoozing clients and taking business meetings.

“[The arrest is] just going to make the two of them stop and pause, and think about maybe how much Jim’s drinking plays a role in their lives – if it does or not.”

Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon, who have 7-month-old son Tennessee together, have been given bail until their court hearing on May 22.

Reese Witherspoon – who also has children Ava, 13, and son Deacon, 10, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe – has since made a public apology for her behavior.

Referring to disrespectful comments to authorities, which allegedly included the statement “you’re about to find out who I am”, the actress said: “Out of respect for the
ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now.

“But I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said.

“It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job.

“I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behavior.”

Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon’s friend Chelsea Handler told Entertainment Tonight that the actress was “doing fine”.

“She was just trying to protect her husband, so,” she said.

“I mean everybody makes mistakes, so it’s not a big deal.”

Chelsea Handler met up with Reese Witherspoon, her husband and a group of friends including Cameron Diaz, Michael Keaton, Judd Apatow, and Leslie Mann – two days after the couple’s arrest.

According to Us Weekly, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth joined their friends at the Greenwich Hotel in New York City.

Reese Witherspoon began dating Jim Toth in early February 2010, three years after her divorce from actor Ryan Phillippe with who she has two children.

Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon married in Ojai, California in March 2011.

According to Variety, Reese Witherspoon and James Toth are not expected to report to the judge at their court ordered appearance and are anticipated to, through their attorney, request a postponement.

James Toth was apprehended after midnight on Friday for recklessly weaving across Peachtree Street, in the city of Atlanta.

The police report alleges that he smelled of alcohol and appeared “disheveled”.

After pulling the DUI suspect over, the sobriety test was conducted in a Walgreens parking lot.

Reese Witherspoon is said to have been warned to remain inside her vehicle, while her husband was subjected to the DUI test.

The officer on the scene claims that Reese Witherspoon became clearly agitated and eventually disobeyed his verbal commands.

The officer reported: “Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer.”

The law enforcer explained in the report: “I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet.”

But once James Toth was handcuffed, the mother-of-three disembarked from her seat, telling the officer that she was a “US citizen” and that she had the right to “stand on American ground”.

The report then described how Reese Witherspoon resisted him as he grabbed her arms to arrest her.

James Toth is said to have made a verbal attempt to calm his hysterical wife.

The officer’s report further details: “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, <<Do you know my name?>> I answered, <<No, I don’t need to know your name>>. I then added, <<right now>>. Mrs. Witherspoon stated, <<You’re about to find out who I am>>.”

According to the arresting officer: “Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, <<You are going to be on national news>>. I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine.”

James Toth is said to be facing charges for DUI and failure to stay within his lane while on the road.

While Reese Witherspoon’s alleged violation is “disorderly conduct (obstruction)”, which falls under municipal ordinance.
