Green Book sprang a surprise by winning the award for best picture at this year’s ceremony in Los Angeles.

Olivia Colman defied the odds to scoop an Oscar for best actress for her role in The Favourite and charmed viewers with a funny and tearful speech.

Green Book won three awards in total, including best picture, which had been expected to go to Netflix’s Roma.

Bohemian Rhapsody won the most awards in total with four, while Roma and Black Panther also won three each.

Olivia Colman, who started out as a sidekick in TV sitcoms like Peep Show, was in shock when her name was called.

Glenn Close had been the firm favorite for her role in The Wife – and now has the unenviable record of seven nominations without a win.

Olivia Colman is the first British actress to win the prize since Kate Winslet in 2009.

The four awards for Bohemian Rhapsody, the authorized biopic of Queen and Freddie Mercury, included best actor for Rami Malek, who won rave reviews for playing the late singer.

It was later reported that Rami Malek, 37, fell off the stage after the ceremony concluded and had to be helped into a seat by security staff.

He was reportedly attended to by paramedics, though he made no reference to the incident later when he spoke to reporters backstage.

Mahershala Ali won his second best supporting actor Oscar in three years. He won for Moonlight in 2017 and has now won for playing jazz pianist Don Shirley in Green Book.

Green Book tells the story of Don Shirley’s tour to the racially segregated US Deep South in the 1960s, but its chances had been thought to have been dented by a series of controversies.

Meanwhile, a tearful Regina King won best supporting actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, from what was her first Oscar nomination.

Richard E Grant, Rachel Weisz and Christian Bale lost out on the acting awards.

However, Mark Ronson shared the best song award with Lady Gaga, among others.

Paul Lambert and Tristan Myles shared the prize for best visual effects with two American colleagues for creating the rocket-rattling effects on First Man, about the first Moon landing.

Key crew members on Bohemian Rhapsody won the two sound awards.

The Oscars failed to find a main host this year after comedian Kevin Hart pulled out following a row about old homophobic tweets.

Instead of having the traditional opening monologue, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler appeared to introduce the show as well as presenting the first award.

“We are not your hosts this year but if we had hosted, it probably would have gone like this,” Tina Fey said – before the trio launched into a sketch poking fun at some of the nominees, which is one of the host’s usual jobs.

The ceremony continued to rely on a procession of stars presenting individual awards.

However, it didn’t obviously suffer from the lack of an overarching host, and it helped the event move along.

Queen, fronted by singer Adam Lambert, had opened the ceremony with a bombastic medley of We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions as A-listers waved and clapped along in their seats.

The Marvel blockbuster is the first superhero movie ever to be nominated for best picture.

The Favourite actress Olivia Colman is among the acting nominees, alongside her co-star Rachel Weisz and Christian Balefor Vice.

Olivia Colman’s strongest competition in the best actress category is likely to come from Glenn Close, who is odds-on favorite to win her first Academy Award for The Wifeafter six previous nominations, according to bookmakers.

Yalitza Aparicio is nominated for her first screen role, as the Mexican maid in Roma. The Netflix film has also given the media-services provider its first ever best picture nomination.

The best actress category also includes Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me?and Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born.

Lady Gaga’s co-star Bradley Cooper is nominated in the best actor category, but he missed out on a nod for best director.

The frontrunners for the best actor award are two men who earned acclaim for portraying real-life public figures.

Rami Malek won rave reviews for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, while Christian Bale transformed into former Vice-President Dick Cheney with the help of prosthetics in Vice.

Richard E. Grant has received his first ever Oscar nomination, for best supporting actor for his role in the film Can You Ever Forgive Me?.

The parents of mystery girl Maria are the Bulgarian Roma couple who came forward earlier this week, DNA tests have confirmed.

Sasha Ruseva spotted the blond, blue-eyed girl on television after she was removed from a Roma camp in Greece last week, allegedly telling her neighbors she was the “fool” who had given the girl up, her grandmother Zineb Kasimova told NBC News in an earlier interview.

Zineb Kasimova had said that she would be prepared to “take her home,” if the tests proved conclusive, although the girl’s future now still remains unclear.

“They left the kid because they have no money at all,” said Zineb Kasimova, who has about 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“When the mother saw the child on TV, she went to the neighbors and told them, <<I was a fool to leave the kid there>>.”

Sasha Ruseva told Bulgarian TV on Thursday that she had once left a baby behind in Greece after working there.

“I didn’t take any money,” she said.

“I just didn’t have enough money to feed her. I intended to go back and take my child home, but meanwhile I gave birth to two more kids, so I was not able to go.”

Bulgarian police later questioned Sasha Ruseva and her 36-year-old husband Atanas Rusev, whose DNA was later shown to match with samples taken by the Greek police from the little girl.

“The prosecutors’ office has opened a pre-trial investigation against [Sasha Ruseva] for agreeing to sell her child on an undisclosed date in 2009 in Greece,” the regional prosecutor’s office in the southern town of Kazanlak said in a statement.

“The probe is opened following checks linked to the female child with the name Maria in Greece.”

Sasha Ruseva and her husband both vanished after being interviewed by investigators, police told NBC News on Friday.

From their small shacks next to an unpaved road in Nikolaevo, neighbors told NBC News that the couple have nine children – including four who are blond and fair-skinned like Maria.

Maria was found living with Christos Salis, 39, and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40, last week in a Roma settlement near Farsala, Greece.

Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulou have been charged with abduction and procuring false documents. Magistrates ordered that Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulou be held in custody until they face trial.

Their lawyer Marietta Palavra told NBC News earlier this week that Maria’s real mother is a Bulgarian Roma prostitute who was looking for a home for the unwanted baby among local Roma families in Greece.

Bulgarian police is questioning a couple suspected of being the biological parents of Maria, the young girl found in a Roma community in Greece last week, reports say.

Sasha Ruseva and Atanas Rusev are said by Bulgarian media to have several children, some of whom resemble Maria.

The girl was reportedly born in Greece. But Sasha Ruseva is quoted as denying Maria was left there for money.

Bulgarian police have declined to comment on the reports.

Maria came to the Greek police’s attention after they raided the Roma camp near Farsala in central Greece, initially searching for drugs and weapons.

They noticed the lack of resemblance between the blonde-haired, green-eyed, pale-skinned little girl and her parents, and found further discrepancies when they investigated the family’s documents.

The couple, Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, have since been charged with child abduction.

Maria is currently being cared for by a charity in Athens. There have been 8,000 inquiries following an appeal to identify her, and the international police body Interpol are involved in the search for her biological family.

The Roma couple keeping mystery girl Maria in their camp have been formally charged in Greece with abduction.

The couple have been placed in detention pending a trial.

Maria was found during a raid on a Roma camp in central Greece last week.

DNA tests showed that she was not related to the couple, who insist they were given her legitimately.

Maria is being cared for by a charity in Athens, which has received more than 8,000 calls after an appeal.

The Roma couple appeared before judges on Monday to answer charges of abducting a minor and holding false papers.

The 39-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were identified by Greek police as Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulou.

The Roma community where the girl was found has rallied around the couple, saying they looked after her well.

The head of the Roma association in Farsala in central Greece says the pair treated her better than their biological children and that she loved them.

Ahead of Monday’s hearing, a lawyer representing the Roma couple, Kostas Katsavos, said that they were carrying out a search for the girl’s mother.

He said the couple claim the woman had given Maria to them because she could not look after her daughter.

“Our clients’ claim is that <<we never abducted this child, we just adopted her>> in a way that was not legal, that we can confess,” said Kostas Katsavos.

But the couple are suspected by social workers of kidnapping the girl and sending her out to beg.

Police initially raided the Roma camp to search for drugs and weapons.

They noticed the lack of resemblance between the blonde-haired, blue-eyed, pale-skinned little girl and her parents, and found further discrepancies when they investigated the family’s documents.

The couple had registered different numbers of children with different regional family registries.

The Greek authorities say the couple were in possession of false papers which suggested the woman had given birth to six children within a 10-month period.

When questioned about how they came to have Maria, the couple made “constantly changing claims”, Thessalia Province Police Director Vassilis Halatsis said.

Through Interpol, Greece has requested assistance from other European countries.

Police decided to appeal internationally as the girl looked as if she might be from northern or eastern Europe.

The brother of the man claiming to be Maria’s father repeated the defense that she had been given to them lawfully after her birth.

Kostas Katsavos said the couple claim the woman had given Maria to them because she could not look after her own biological daughter.

Greek police has launched an international appeal to try to identify a young blonde girl found living on a Roma settlement with a family she did not resemble.

According to DNA tests, the child, called Maria and aged around 4, was not related to the couple she lived with.

Maria is now being looked after by a charity. Her photo has been released to help find her family.

Officials fear the little girl may have been a victim of abduction or child trafficking.

Police are appealing internationally as the little girl looks like she might be from northern or eastern Europe.

The president of the Smile of the Child organization that is looking after the little girl, Kostas Yaaopoulos, says the child is confused and shocked by the change in her environment.

The girl was being used to beg on the streets of Larissa because she was blonde and cute, he alleged.

The case will offer fresh hope to the parents of Madeleine McCann who disappeared from a Portuguese holiday resort in May 2007.
