Police dogs have found where fugitives David Sweat and Richard Matt may have spent the night after they escaped from New York prison six days ago.

Food wrappers and other evidence were discovered in the woods nearby Clinton Correctional Facility.

Police have been receiving hundreds of tips from the public, and a sighting has been reported in Philadelphia.

The manhunt in northern New York and surrounding areas has now extended to campsites and boat slips in neighboring Vermont.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo held a joint press conference outside the maximum security prison from where the men escaped.Richard Matt and David Sweat New York jailbreak

“New York was going to be hot. Vermont would be cooler, in terms of law enforcement,” Peter Shumlin said, referring to the unspecified information about the men’s whereabouts.

Rainstorms have complicated efforts by masking scents detectable by search dogs and forcing officers to wade through swamps.

Officials at the Saranac Central School District, less than a mile from the prison, closed schools on June 11 “in order to assist law enforcement personnel with their search efforts, and due to the closure of a number of roads”.

Police are also interviewing a cab driver in Philadelphia, who says he may have given a ride to the men early on Thursday morning.

Philadelphia is about 400 miles from the prison.

Police have received hundreds of tips from the public, but the Philadelphia police commissioner says there is no reason to believe David Sweat, 34, and Richard Matt, 48, are in the city.

Richard Matt was given a jail term of 25 years to life for beating a man to death in 1997.

David Sweat was serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy, Kevin Tarsia.

There was a heavy police presence at the station in order to contain the charged atmosphere as fans from the two clubs met, and amid the mayhem one fan filmed a mad moment when a police dog got a little bit confused.

Rather than looking to contain the fans, the police dog set about attacking one of the policemen by biting his behind.

A 15-year-old girl has been bitten by a police dog during a gun safety presentation at Nogales High School in Arizona on Thursday.

The dog’s handler and two other officers were putting on the gun safety presentation when the dog got out, police Capt. Heriberto Zuniga told the Nogales International.

Students suddenly ran into the classroom to tell them the dog was on the loose.

The dog’s handler ran out and secured his German shepherd, the Associated Press reports.

The 15-year-old girl student who was injured was taken to hospital with bites and scratches but wasn’t seriously hurt.

Heriberto Zuniga believes “somebody opened the door allowing the dog out of the vehicle”, a 2011 Ford Expedition specially outfitted as a canine unit.

The SUV was parked about 15 feet away from the classroom. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

The doors on the SUV are normally locked and officers were perplexed how a door could be opened from outside the vehicle, Heriberto Zuniga said.

The Ford Expedition was sent to a company in Tucson for inspection, and technicians discovered a fuse in the spring-loaded electronically controlled door had failed. It was replaced.

“Our first concern is the girl,” Heriberto Zuniga said.

The girl had bites to the arms and scratches on the lower back, but both Heriberto Zuniga and Principal Judith Mendoza-Jimenez said the teen was “OK”.

“We were extremely lucky. The dog is trained to bite and pull,” Heriberto Zunigo said.

“That didn’t happen. It appears in this case the dog realized the girl did not pose a threat.”

Judith Mendoza-Jimenez said: “It was an isolated incident. The dog got out of the car. We don’t know how.

“The girl saw the dog coming and she started running so the dog attacked her. Once she was on the ground the dog let her go.”

So far, nobody is confessing to having opened the door, “but we’re hoping that through interviews, the sheriff’s investigators will get some leads,” Heriberto Zuniga said.
