It takes a steely resolve to own a restaurant. Whether you’re keeping your chefs calm as they perfect their culinary delights, making sure your waiters and waitresses are treating your customers well, or tracking down the finest ingredients for the cheapest prices, managing a restaurant can be a lot like spinning plates, except you can’t afford to spin plates if you’re running a restaurant. What if you break your precious, pricey plates? That’ll definitely dent your budget. Best sticking to metaphorical plates, then.

However, one balancing act you can’t afford to mess up is your kitchen’s cleanliness.

That’s right, the hygiene of your restaurant’s kitchen should be one of your top priorities. With health and safety inspections a constant threat and a three-strikes-and-you’re-out policy strictly adhered to, being vigilant of your workplace’s cleanliness is vital.

What’s more, no customer wants the knowledge that their food is being prepared in pongy or unhygienic conditions. Just imagine the reputation you’ll get if you’re exposed by a health and safety inspector as a filth merchant! It’s a situation that some restaurants could fail to recover from.

But, just how can you keep your kitchen safe from those dreaded inspections?

Bring in the professionals

While it’s perfectly possible to keep your kitchen’s cleanliness ticking over when getting rid of day-to-day grime, sometimes you’ll need to bring in the experts for a dash of industrial kitchen cleaning.

Where your regular staff might fail to scrub, professional outfits will clean with ease, whether it’s your hard-to-reach vents or the much-neglected undersides of your shelves, industrial kitchen cleaners will be able to sanitise your workspace thoroughly, giving it that all-new shine once again.

Get your staff to be as clean as can be

It shouldn’t just be the responsibility of your cleaners to keep your workplaces tidy – every member of staff should be aware of good hygiene, and do their bit by cleaning as they go.

Most health and safety rules cover this already, with specific rules regarding cleaning directly after cutting meat to avoid salmonella, as well as various other guidelines to govern good kitchen practice. The real problem is finding employees who will follow the rules down to a tee.

So, give your staff regular crash courses on cleanliness, encourage them to always be vigilant of the mess they make and, above all, ensure that they keep your restaurant as clean as can be.

Starting with 2014, the European Commission will ban the use of refillable bottles and dipping bowls of olive oil at restaurant tables.

From 1 January 2014, restaurants may only serve olive oil in tamper-proof packaging, labeled to EU standards.

The Commission, the EU’s executive branch, says the move will protect consumers and improve hygiene.

But critics have accused the EU of unwarranted meddling at a time of economic crisis.

A Pew Research Center poll released on May 13 showed positive views of the EU are at or near their low point in most of the eight countries surveyed.

European Commission spokesman Oliver Bailly said the olive oil regulation would benefit consumers.

“We are just making clear that when you want to have olive oil of a certain quality in a restaurant, you get exactly the one you are paying for,” he told a news briefing in Brussels.

Olive oil is a frequent target of food fraud, with cheaper oils being sold in its place to unwitting consumers.

The EU’s largest producers of olive oil – Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy – are among those hardest hit by the economic downturn.

Cuban health ministry has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Havana with 51 people infected – the biggest incidence of the disease there in decades.

An official statement said health workers had detected an increase in “watery diarrhoea” in some districts, which has been established as cholera.

The source has been identified as a foodseller who caught cholera during a previous outbreak in eastern Cuba.

Doctors have been going house to house in Havana areas, checking for symptoms.

The official confirmation follows several days of speculation about an upsurge in diarrhoea in the capital, where a 46-year-old man died of suspected cholera earlier this month.

In the central Havana district of Cerro, where the outbreak is believed to have begun, cafes and restaurants have been closed and only the sale of sealed food and drink is permitted.

The outbreak was detected on January 6. According to the health ministry, measures taken since then mean the disease is in its “extinction phase”.

People are being urged to take care with hygiene and in the preparation of food.

Cholera is carried by contaminated water or food. It causes severe dehydration through diarrhoea and can prove fatal if untreated.

Until last July, Cuba had not experienced any significant outbreak since well before the 1959 revolution.

Jennifer Aniston and Chelsea Handler have been known as being the best friends, with Jennifer saying: “I am madly in love with Chelsea Handler.”

What appears to be roses and champagne on the surface hides murkier depths, if a segment filmed for Chelsea Handler’s After Lately show is anything to go by.

In the show, Chelsea Handler, 36, proudly introduces her A-list friend Jennifer Aniston to her E! writing team and tells them that the former Friends star was tickled by a sketch they’re working on.

But when Chelsea Handler has to take a call, Jennifer Aniston asks the team: “Do you think that’s funny? That is so not funny.”

The Chelsea Lately writers agree that the humour is off but defend their star by telling her friend that she’s been very busy.

Then Jennifer Aniston really hits her stride, by asking sarcastically: “[Is she busy] gossiping about more successful people that are better-looking than her? Putting her name on another dumb book to make the world an even dumber place?”

Then Jennifer Aniston sardonically drawled: “<<Hi, I’m Chelsea. I really think that everything I say is funny>>. You know what I mean? It’s a shock that she really still has her own show.”

Before asking: “That little guy…?”

To which the team chime together: “Chewy,” referencing Chelsea Handler’s sidekick and comedy foil on the show.

But Jennifer Aniston lampoons Joan Rivers’s recent condemnation of Chelsea Handler, by saying: “No, the little one that she slept with to get the gig? He doesn’t even work for the network anymore.”

Jennifer Aniston went on to claim that Chelsea Handler is not the cleanest person, adding: “And then her hygiene… have you noticed this? Honestly, when we were in Cabo, she never showered! She would be like, <<What? I went in the pool>>. It’s gross!”

Of course, it’s all for fun and Jennifer Aniston, who was recently reported to be expecting her first child with boyfriend Justin Theroux, is still besotted with her gal pal.

Staff writer, Heather McDonald told US Weekly: “It was great having Jen Aniston on the show. She’s super sweet, has a really hot body, the good hair.

“Jen is also a good-friend to host Chelsea, as she had no problem doing her friend a favour and making an appearance.”

Reese Witherspoon was another actress who was given a good report by the writer after she made her second cameo on the show.
