Drug drama Breaking Bad was the biggest winner at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards last night, scooping five awards including best drama series.

It was the second consecutive year that the show, which ended last September after five seasons, had picked up the ceremony’s highest honor.

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston was named best actor in a drama series for a fourth time as the teacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White.

He beat a host of Hollywood heavyweights including Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for their roles in the acclaimed crime drama True Detective.

His co-stars Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn were also honored for best supporting actor and supporting actress in a drama series.

British drama Sherlock has won a hat-trick of awards at the Primetime Emmys in Los Angeles.

There were four awards for Sherlock including best cinematography, music, single-camera picture editing and sound editing.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman won best actor and best supporting actor in a mini-series, although neither was at the ceremony.

Steven Moffat also won best writing in a mini-series for the final episode of Sherlock‘s third season.

In other categories, The Good Wife star Julianna Margulies won the Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series for her part as lawyer Alicia Florrick.

There were also best actress and best supporting actress in a mini-series awards for Oscar winners Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates for their roles in American Horror Story: Coven.

Sitcom Modern Family was named best comedy series for a fifth consecutive year, equaling the record set by 1990s show Frasier for most comedy wins.

Ty Burrell also walked away with best supporting actor in a comedy for his role on the show.

The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons won best actor in a comedy series. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her third consecutive Emmy for playing foul-mouthed US Vice President Selina Meyer in political satire Veep.

Allison Janney won the best supporting actress in a comedy series for Mom.

The ceremony also paid tribute to industry members who died in the past year.

They included James Garner, Ruby Dee, Sid Caesar, Carmen Zapata and Elaine Stritch.

It concluded with a special homage to Robin Williams by long-time friend Billy Crystal, who remembered the actor as “the brightest star in a comedy galaxy”.

“It is very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in our lives,” Billy Crystal said.

“While some of the brightest of our celestial bodies are actually extinct now, their energy long since cool, but miraculously, because they float in the heavens so far away from the sound, their beautiful life will continue to shine on us forever.

“And the glow will be so bright, it will warm your heart, it will make your eyes glisten, and you’ll think to yourself, Robin Williams – what a concept.”

The main ceremony at the Nokia Theatre followed the Creative Arts Emmy prize-giving on August 16, honoring TV guest stars and behind-the-scenes crew.

The 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on August 25.

In response to whether the character would appear anywhere else again, Bryan Cranston added: “Never say never.”

Bryan Cranston’s co-star Aaron Paul revealed a few weeks ago that he’d found it difficult to come to terms with no longer playing his character Jesse Pinkman.

“It took a minute,” he said.

“It was hard for me to say goodbye to Jesse. I love him.”

As previously confirmed, Aaron Paul said a forthcoming Breaking Bad spin-off – called Better Call Saul – would star Bob Odenkirk as lawyer Saul Goodman, who featured in the original show.

“It would be nice to play Jesse Pinkman again in his happier times,” he said.

Better Call Saul will be aired on Netflix in November 2014.

Apple has decided to refund fans of TV show Breaking Bad after a mix-up over the number of episodes in its final season.

The confusion meant many people effectively paid twice for the final 16 episodes of the hugely popular show.

This was because Apple charged people who bought a “season pass” twice – once for each eight-show chunk as they were billed as separate seasons.

Apple has sent out emails giving people an iTunes voucher for the extra cash they spent.

Breaking Bad Season 5 was split into two halves by cable channel AMC with each eight-episode section being shown a year apart. The second half of this season, which sees the show reach a conclusion, was first broadcast and made available online on August 11.

The split caused problems on iTunes where many people had paid to see the closing series expecting that this would include all 16 episodes.

When Apple charged people again for the second eight episodes, called The Final Season, many complained and one outraged fan took legal action over the extra charge.

Apple has refunded the extra $22.99 levied on those people who were charged extra to watch The Final Season. Those who bought a season pass for Season 5 will now be able to watch all 16 episodes.

TV drama Breaking Bad has scored its highest audience yet in the US, as the show’s final run begins.

A total of 5.9 million viewers tuned in to cable channel AMC on Sunday night, doubling the audience of the opening episode of the last series.

Only zombie drama The Walking Dead has proved a bigger hit for the channel, pulling in 8.1 million fans earlier this year.

Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston as a chemistry teacher turned meth dealer.

Its audience has grown steadily through word of mouth, DVD sales and critical acclaim. The first series averaged 1.2 million viewers, while the most recent series was seen by 2.6 million.

The gritty drama is not afraid to pull its punches, killing off key players and charting the moral tailspin of Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White.

Breaking Bad has won five Emmys since it debuted in 2008, and is up for a further eight prizes at this year’s ceremony on September 22.

After Sunday night’s premiere, only seven episodes remain.
