Holly Woodlawn has died of cancer at the age of 69.

The Puerto-Rico born transgender actress inspired Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side and appeared in Andy Warhol’s 70s movies Trash and Women in Revolt.

Lou Reed’s opening lyrics read: “Holly came from Miami, F-L-A / Hitchhiked her way across the USA / Plucked her eyebrows on the way / Shaved her legs, and then he was a she.”

Holly Woodlawn died on December 6 in Los Angeles, her friend Mariela Huerta said.

A memorial service is expected to be held in the city.

Holly Woodlawn, born Haroldo Santiago Franceschi Rodriguez Danhakl, took on her new name after leaving home aged 15 and hitchhiking to New York City.

She told the Guardian in 2007 of her brief fame after appearing in Warhol’s films: “I was very happy when I gradually became a Warhol superstar. I felt like Elizabeth Taylor!

“Little did I realize that not only would there be no money, but that your star would flicker for two seconds and that was it. But it was worth it, the drugs, the parties, it was fabulous.”

Holly Woodlawn also explained that she did not get to know Lou Reed properly until after the song’s 1972 release.

Despite receiving critical acclaim for her film work, she did not find mainstream success.

Holly Woodlawn also appeared in 90s independent movies Twin Falls Idaho and Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss, as well as the Golden Globe-winning series Transparent, about the father of an LA family who comes out as transgender.

Joe Dallesandro, who starred in Trash, tweeted on December 6: “Holly Woodlawn was in Room 306 when I arrived to see her today. At 3:06pm LA time, she passed away.”

He also said on Facebook that he had visited in her in a hospice, adding: “I was next to her talking and telling her all the love that was being sent her way from everyone. It was like she knew I was there.”

They played a couple in Trash, produced by Andy Warhol and directed by Paul Morrissey, living in the fringes of New York’s East Village, scrounging for food and drugs.

According to Mariela Huerta, Holly Woodlawn, who had been battling brain and liver cancer, had no surviving relatives.

Andy Warhol’s work Triple Elvis has sold for $81.9 million at a Christie’s auction of post-war and contemporary art in New York.

The 1963 work, which used ink and silver paint to depict Elvis Presley as a gun-toting cowboy, was sold to an anonymous European telephone bidder.

Andy Warhol’s quadruple portrayal of Marlon Brando was also auctioned for almost $70 million.

Christie’s said the auction commanded a total of $852.9 million, breaking its record for a sale of art of its kind.

Andy Warhol’s two large portraits had been acquired by a German casino house in the 1970s.

Triple Elvis was one of 22 versions made by Andy Warhol, while the Brando artwork – which repeats the same image four times – was one of only two, which were made in 1967.

Two works from Andy Warhol’s Death and Disaster series have sold for a combined $100 million at Christie’s in New York.

1964’s Race Riot – inspired by pictures of a notorious civil rights protest in Birmingham, Alabama – went for $62.9 million.

The 1962 painting White Marilyn, completed shortly after Marilyn Monroe took her life, sold for $41 million.

Alongside works by Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, the paintings helped Christie’s set a new auction record.

In total, the sale of post-war and contemporary art raised $744 million, the highest ever total for a single auction.

The previous highest figure was set in November 2013, also at Christie’s, when the grand total was $691.5 million.

Ten auction records were set at Tuesday night’s sale, with works by American sculptor Alexander Calder and artist Joseph Cornell fetching new high prices.

After a fierce round of bidding, Newman’s Black Fire I, a 1961 canvas showing a thick column of black alongside smaller ribbons of white and black, made $84.2 million, almost double his previous highest price.

Francis Bacon’s Three Studies for a Portrait of John Edwards surged to $80.8 million, from an opening bid of $50 million.

Andy Warhol’s Farrah Fawcett portrait belongs to actor Ryan O’Neal, a California jury has decided.

The University of Texas at Austin had sued Ryan O’Neal, claiming Farrah Fawcett left them the painting as part of a donation.

Farrah Fawcett, who died in 2009 aged 62, attended the university in the 1960s.

Ryan O’Neal, 72, had an 18-year relationship with Farrah Fawcett and removed the painting from her home after her death.

The actor said the portrait was a treasured memento of their relationship.

The portrait is one of a pair created by Andy Warhol in 1980, when he took Polaroid photos of the actress and added splashes of color to a monochrome canvas.

One version is currently on display at the university’s Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, while Ryan O’Neal has hung the other over the bed at his Malibu beach house.

The university launched its legal case in 2011 after the portrait was spotted in the actor’s home during an episode of reality TV show Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals.

University lawyer David Beck had urged jurors to give the school the portrait in accordance with Farrah Fawcett’s wishes.

“You’ve seen Farrah. You’ve heard from Farrah,” David Beck said on Monday during closing arguments.

“Please, please, speak for her.”

David Beck had also questioned whether Ryan O’Neal had ever discussed removing the portrait with anyone, including a trustee charged with carrying out Farrah Fawcett’s final wishes.

Ryan O’Neal, who removed the portrait outside her bedroom, said: “Of course I did. I’m sure I did. It wasn’t a secret.”

He told jurors that if he is allowed to keep the Warhol portrait, he will never sell it, and that his estate documents call for it to be passed down to his and Farrah Fawcett’s son, Redmond O’Neal.

Kanye West has hired Monica Warhol, Andy Warhol’s cousin, to paint a portrait of his fiancée Kim Kardashian.

Monica Warhol spoke with Page Six about her new commission, and says she thinks her famed cousin would have loved Kim Kardashian.

“She’s famous for nothing,” Monica Warhol said.

“Kim is beautiful. She’s so manufactured. She looks like a human Barbie.”

Monica Warhol also revealed she never met Andy, who died in 1987 when she was 10. She claims to have never studied Andy Warhol’s past work, saying she never even owned a book of his artwork until about a year ago.

However, Monica Warhol’s prints are reminiscent of her cousin’s signature pop art style. The younger Warhol has already drawn portraits of rapper Flo Rida and Lenny Kravitz.

After an elaborate October proposal at San Francisco’s AT&T Park, Kanye West has been over the moon when talking about Kim Kardashian, his future wife and mother of his daughter North.

“Our love story’s a love story for the ages,” Kanye West raved of his romance with Kim Kardashian in a recent interview.

“I felt like when we first got together, it was like a Romeo and Juliet kind of thing.”

Lou Reed has been remembered by fans and family at a music-rich public memorial on the streets of New York.

Billed as a “simple celebration”, the event saw fans dance to Lou Reed’s hits which were played over loudspeakers.

Lou Reed’s widow, performance artist Laurie Anderson, greeted well-wishers as they enjoyed the music.

The former Velvet Underground frontman died on October 27 after complications from a liver transplant.

The memorial was previewed on Lou Reed’s Facebook page as a gathering with “no speeches, no live performances, just Lou’s voice, guitar music and songs – playing the recordings selected by his family and friends.”

Lou Reed’s hits could be heard for three hours on Thursday across the plaza next to the city’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and featured many high points of his long career.

His music frequently made reference to New York.

Known for tracks including Perfect Day and Walk on the Wild Side, Lou Reed was considered one of the most influential singers and songwriters in rock.

The Velvet Underground became renowned for their fusion of art and music and for collaborating with Andy Warhol.

As a solo artist, Lou Reed released 20 studio albums. His last, Hudson River Wind Meditations, was released in 2007.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that long-serving Rolling Stone magazine music critic and writer Anthony DeCurtis is to write a biography of Lou Reed.

Billed as the “inside story” of Lou Reed’s life, the Little, Brown and Co book is untitled and has yet be assigned a publication date.

Andy Warhol’s painting Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) has sold for $105 million at Sotheby’s, breaking the artist’s record by more than $30 million.

Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) depicts the aftermath of an accident, with a twisted body sprawled across the mangled interior of a vehicle.

It is one of four double-panel car crash paintings that Andy Warhol created in 1963. The others are all in museums.

Andy Warhol’s previous auction record was set in 2007, when $71.7 million was paid for Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I).

Silver Car Crash has previously been owned by collectors such as Charles Saatchi, Thomas Ammann, as well as German multi-millionaire playboy Gunter Sachs.

Five bidders went as high as $80 million, said auctioneer Tobias Meyer. Sotheby’s did not identify the winner, who placed their bid by telephone.

“It’s a great price – and completely worth it,” said Tobias Meyer.

“It’s the best painting I’ve ever sold in my whole career.”

The price was the second-highest in history for a contemporary work of art – the highest being the $142.4 million fetched by Francis Bacon’s Three Studies of Lucian Freud earlier this week at Christie’s.

Andy Warhol’s record-breaking work used images appropriated from newspapers, which he then silk-screened onto canvas, using reflective silver paint, repeating the scene many times over. The second panel in the 8-by-13 foot work is a blank canvas of silver.

An admitted hard drinker and drug user for many years, Lou Reed underwent a liver transplant in May this year after he had cancelled five California concert dates scheduled in April.

“I am a triumph of modern medicine,” Lou Reed posted on his website on June 1st.

“I look forward to being on stage performing, and writing more songs to connect with your hearts and spirits and the universe well into the future.”

The Velvet Underground never achieved much commercial success, but revolutionized rock and punk in the 1960s and ’70s and their popularity grew in the subsequent decades.

The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
